AYDA is a handwoven stool made from paper yarn over a beechwood frame. Its shape is defined by a subtle curve, created through the tension of the woven seat and the precision of its structure.
Inspired by ancient Egyptian furniture, the stool reflects an early understanding of balance between function and form. At the same time, it connects to Danish design traditions through the use of paper yarn, a material known for its strength and tactility.
The project was developed as part of the Egypt Project, a collaboration between the Royal Danish Academy and Pinocchio Furnitures, and produced in Egypt during the winter of 2024. It brings together different cultural references into a single, contemporary object.
AYDA is built on contrast. The seat is soft and woven by hand, while the legs are more defined and geometric. A key idea in the design is to create a sense of double curvature using straight wooden elements, giving the stool both stability and a light visual expression.
The name AYDA means “the returner,” referring to a return to the origins of furniture design, reinterpreted in a modern way.
